Starting Before I Feel Ready

Welcome to the first post on The Leading Insight.

I have been thinking about creating this blog for almost a year. I kept telling myself that I needed more time, a clearer direction, or better ideas before I could begin. In reality, I was procrastinating. I was spending more time thinking about starting than actually starting.

With AI, it has never been easier to research ideas, organize thoughts, and improve your writing. The tools are already available. For me, that means “I don’t know where to begin” is no longer a convincing excuse.

Still, easier tools do not make the first step emotionally easy. Starting is often the hardest part.

This post is me finally taking that step.

My vision for this blog is to create a portfolio of what I learn from the profession that, in many ways, chose me. I did not enter this field knowing exactly where it would take me, but it has already given me meaningful work and an enormous world to explore.

What fascinates me about safety is that it requires you to become a student of work itself. My job is literally to learn how other people do their jobs: how tasks are performed, how decisions are made, where risk enters a system, and what makes work safer and more reliable. Then I have to turn that understanding into recommendations people can actually apply.

Because of that, my career will always require me to keep learning.

I do not have a rigid content plan yet, and I am okay with that. I want to explore the HSE industry, reflect on my experiences, research emerging ideas, and learn about the technologies changing the profession. I also want to write about incident learning, human and organizational factors, leadership, risk, and anything else that helps me understand this field more deeply.

Safety is a massive umbrella. It touches people, systems, technology, operations, leadership, and business. That is why I genuinely believe it is one of the most versatile careers someone can pursue.

I am still deciding exactly what this website will become. Is it a blog? A journal? A professional portfolio? Maybe it will be a combination of all three. I suspect the direction will become clearer only after I continue writing.

What matters right now is producing something instead of only consuming. Reading and researching are important, but creating something of your own forces you to organize your thoughts, challenge your assumptions, and develop a perspective.

That matters even more in a world increasingly filled with AI-generated content. I will use AI as a tool to help me research, organize, and communicate more clearly. Still, I want the thinking here to remain grounded in genuine curiosity, real experiences, and honest reflection. I do not want polished writing to come at the expense of being human. I want my writing to be clear, useful, and authentic.

This first post may not contain a major insight about the industry. The point of it is simply to begin.

I want to document this journey while I am still figuring things out, not just after the results look impressive. I want to see what curiosity, grit, and consistency can build over time.
